Community Care

History

CEO Valmay Barkey

In the early 1980s, health and social service professionals throughout Victoria County worked together to develop local home support services. They, along with community volunteers, shared concerns about the unmet needs of seniors and people with special needs in our community.

Following a public meeting to assess community support hosted by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS), a steering committee was formed. The group identified the concept of community care and committed to home support services being provided locally. Community Care was incorporated as a non profit organization on April 26, 1985 with MCSS funding.

A part time coordinator undertook service provision, initiated volunteer recruitment, liaised with existing programs and networked with local seniors’ groups. Funding for full time administration and coordination led to the appointment of Valmay Barkey as Executive Director in 1986.

Today, Community Care provides more than 15 different community support services from 10 locations in the City of Kawartha Lakes, providing service to over 5,000 people a year. And we continue to expand to meet the needs of local communities.

The scope of our agency’s work has broadened to include a new Community Health Centre which opened in the fall of 2009. With a primary target group of “unattached patients”, the CHC has added a focus on health and well-being for all ages to our traditional mandate of promoting independence for seniors and people with special needs.

We are pleased to be working with our community partners to bring to reality the dream of adequate housing for seniors in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Community Care is committed to creating affordable, accessible and supportive housing to our municipality. Find out more about our Village Housing project that is currently under construction
