The Care-A-Van service is available to anyone with special mobility needs who cannot ride in a car. These comfortable, agency-owned vehicles are fully accessible. The vans are used primarily within the City of Kawartha Lakes; however, special arrangements can be made to travel to other destinations. Regular weekday service is operated and weekend trips are available by pre-booking in advance. Care-A-Van service is operated in co-operation with the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Non-Emergency Transfer Vehicles
These vans, equipped to carry wheelchairs and stretchers, provide transportation for medical clients who are stable and do not require the emergency services of an ambulance. The Non-Emergency service helps take pressure from the local Emergency Medical Services, thus freeing ambulances to respond to emergencies in a more timely manner. The service is also on-call to Ross Memorial Hospital to assist with discharges for people who are ready to return home following a hospital stay.
These comfortable vans, two of which are provided to the agency by the Nissan Foundation in co-operation with Economy Wheels in Lindsay, are available to assist individuals who are able to use regular transportation but may have other special needs. They are also used by the agency to provide transportation to and from programs such as Adult Day and deliver Meals on Wheels in some areas.
Fees for Specialized Transportation help cover program operating costs. Call the agency for a full description of costs for transportation services.
Hundreds of dedicated Community Care volunteers provide transportation to clients in their own vehicles. Volunteer drivers do not receive payment for their time – this is their generous gift to the community. A per-kilometre or flat rate reimbursement for drivers’ out-of–pocket expenses such as fuel, insurance and maintenance is paid by the client or client coverage. This service provides transportation to medical appointments, shopping, social activities and more. Most rides take place within the City of Kawartha Lakes, to neighbouring communities or the Greater Toronto Area.
